Martin Luther King, Jr. Student Leadership Conference

A huge part of the MLK Weekend is work for students, by students. This year, the student activities planning committee is being led by co-chairs, Megan Garrett and Brittany Sutton. Students from across the campus, representing a diverse group of organizations and individuals, form the planning committee and are actively engaged. Supporting the students are administrators from UAB, the Admissions Office, the Office for Inclusion and many others.

The planning committee is asking MSU students to join them at all of the events, but particularly, to attend the conference and demonstrate in large numbers a commitment to the issues we face today that are similar to those that Dr. King struggled and gave his life for. The MLK Student Leadership Conference is an opportunity for MSU and Michigan high school students to come together and learn from each other. The Conference focuses on engaging students in leadership and civic engagement.

You are invited to lead a workshop! Individuals and organizations are welcome to propose leading a presentation to engage students in a variety of discussions relative to the conference theme.

The theme for this year’s MLK Celebration is “The Message: Our History, Our Future.” What does this message mean to you? How do you want the future of The Message to play out at MSU and in the world? Submit your proposal for a workshop about nonviolence, social and economic justice, civil rights, and equity for all.

For more information about how to get involved in the conference and other student-led MLK activities, please contact Ignacio Andrade or 517-353-3129, in the Office for Inclusion and Intercultural Initiatives. See the PDF to learn how to can get involved with this conference.

Volunteer Opportunity from Martin Waymire Advocacy Communication:

We are working with MacNeil/Lehrer Productions on an event they plan to hold at the Lansing Center Nov. 13, 14 and 15 called "By The People." They will be selecting a cross section of 200 Michigan residents, providing them with background materials and bringing them to stay in Lansing for the weekend to discuss public policy issues. They will also be putting together panels of Michigan “stakeholders” on several different issues. They will have people who represent right, left and center on each of the panels. For instance, if they were discussing energy they would include an advocate of low income consumers, consumer groups, advocates of alternative energy, and large industrial customers. The results of this weekend will be edited into a television program that will be aired on public broadcast channels.

This is a link to the website on By The People http://www.pbs.org/newshour/btp/. The November event is not up yet, but it will give you the idea.

We are now attempting to secure volunteer group assistants to help with the small group discussions that will take place throughout the day. The commitment would be:

Saturday, November 14th from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and/or
Sunday, November 15th from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m.

If you are interested in taking on this volunteer opportunity, contact Amy Morris by Friday, November 6, 2009 at amorris@mwadvocacy.com

The CW and PRSSA are teaming up for a new and exciting competition! This campaign will focus on promoting and getting viewers for The CW's new 90210 and the series premire of the new Melrose Place! The Lagrant Foundation to award $100,000 in scholarships to ethnic minority students.

(January 13, 2009) The Lagrant Foundation (TLF) is now accepting applications for $100,000 in scholarships for the 2009/2010 academic year. Applications must be submitted to TLF by Friday, February 27, for consideration.

Ethnic minority undergraduate and graduate students majoring in advertising, marketing or public relations are eligible for the TLF scholarships. In an effort to increase ethnic minority representation in the communications industry, TLF awards $5,000 scholarships to undergraduate students and $10,000 scholarships to graduate students.

TLF was established in 1998 by Mr. Kim L. Hunter, whose vision is to see more ethnic representation within the fields of advertising, marketing and public relations. By targeting college students, TLF paves the path toward a successful career right from the start.

TLF scholarship requirements are as follows: students must be of African American, Asian/Pacific Islander, Hispanic/Latino or Native American descent; must have a 2.75 GPA if undergraduate or 3.2 GPA if graduate: must be seeking an undergraduate or graduate degree at an accredited college or university; must be enrolled in one of the three programs mentioned above; and must make a commitment to maintain contact with TLF for assistance with professional development.

Since its inception in 1998, The Lagrant Foundation has awarded a total of $770,000 to 136 students nationwide. In 2009, TLF will celebrate its 11th Anniversary Scholarship Recognition Reception and Awards Program in New York City. The scholarship recipients will participate in a day-long career development workshop and have the opportunity to meet with industry professionals.

Donors who have contributed $5,000 or more in cash or in-kind this year are:
